That's a great question. Mortal Kombat is a franchise that has never shied away from playing with timelines and continuities. 2011's Mortal Kombat 9 is one of the most prominent examples of this, being a reboot/reimagining of the first three games of the franchise. And just three games later, we're doing it again!
At the end of 2019's Mortal Kombat 11, series protagonist Liu Kang massively leveled up, gaining nearly god-like powers. He has since created a new timeline, with the hopes of ushering in a better and more peaceful world than the ones prior. Of course, in the Mortal Kombat franchise, nothing ever goes right.
